最新這個奧運在英國舉行。「英國」英語怎麼叫？
這個問題絕不simple and naive呢。
UK? Great Britain? The British Isles? Britain?
原來這些稱謂（一般都是大家所理解的「英國」）是指不同的地方，尢其是政治意義有明確的分別。

• Great Britain（縮寫是GB或GBR）──指倫敦所在的那個大島，包括England, Scotland and Wales，亦包括附近一些小島嶼，例如Isle of Wight, Anglesey, Orkney and Shetland等。
• The British Isles 指British及附近的六千多個島嶼，包括Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersy, Guernsy等。
• UK是簡寫，全名是The United Kingdom of Great Britian and Northern Ireland，指的是Great Britain加上Northern Island。
• British overseas territories 指 Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda 等14個並未獨立的地區，各有自己的政府，它們不是UK的一部分，卻受到UK管治，承認英皇為國家元首。
• British Commonweath 則是由多個英國前殖民地組成的聯盟，包括印度、澳洲、新西蘭、加拿大、愛爾蘭、南非等，它們各自為獨立國家，但承認效忠英皇。

以上指的是政治、法律的定義，可是在現實生活中及文化的層面，國際上使用每多混淆，例如GB往往當作UK使用（本應不包括北愛，卻被當成如此）。
漢語中的混淆更多，例如「英倫三島」一般指的是British Isles（但其實不是「3個島」，而是2大島加六千多個小島），「英倫銀行」指的是Bank of England（該是「英格蘭銀行」，歐洲杯的「英國隊」指的是England）。那個足球隊，（該是「英格蘭隊」，只有奧運這種場合才有英國隊）。
British Commerweath譯為「大英聯邦」，British overseas territorities譯為英國海外地區，倒沒有大問題。
中國人往往將English誤當為British，例如”English breakfast”叫做「英國式早餐」，非常政治不正確（至少令蘇格蘭人反感不已）。不過其實英格蘭人自己亦多有意無意這樣做，美加英語也是如此。
