翻譯涉及的歧義問題，比一般人的想像普遍。筆譯固然可能處處地雷，口譯更往往草木皆兵。
平日講話，不時即會有類似的歧義現象出現：
My roommate is a German student.
一下小心就會解錯譯錯：”German student”既可以是由德國來的某君，同樣可能是唸德語的同學。
“Ah Mei was my wife”怎麼翻？「前妻」還是「亡妻」先要弄個清楚（例如她是否尚在人間），否則闖禍可大可小咯。（不留神更容易將”was” 聽錯為”is”。）
“Mary wants to marry a sailor.”驟耳聽來簡單不過，英語水平一般的都會懂，偏偏內有乾坤──可曾留意”a sailor”既可指早有對象或者仍未有既定人選呢？
- 瑪麗想嫁海員。（即為海員妻）
- 瑪麗想嫁給某個海員。（即對象某君業出海）。
“Her boyfriend is Indian.”如果你翻為：「她的男有是印度人」可能大錯特錯──中文此語在亞洲講，大多數沒有問題，但是在北美洲，幾乎肯定是指「印第安人」（即”red Indian”族人），如果美加人士指印度裔人士，許多時還是要指明為”Indian Indian”！
同理，看看這句話：”Fly across the continent is cheap.”其中的”continent”，在英國是指「歐洲大陸」，在美加是指北美呢洲大陸。
