事緣1970年代某大出版社將一本英國的急救手冊中譯，在香港發行中文版，聘得筆者做審稿把關，OK了才送去付印。
上述那話就是出自書中旅遊一章。
未看原文，即知不妥。為甚麼是「到幾乎所有外地國家度假……」？
這個譯文明明是「信達雅」俱備，表面上絕對忠於原文（連「意義」）也沒有出錯──其實不然：意義（meaning有兩部分，一是sense（字面意思），一是use（使用效果），此譯文只有前者，後者完全糟糕）。
筆者堅持要改成這樣：
被動物咬着，都可能染上瘋狗症。
理由：原來全英國是從未發生過瘋狗症（狂犬症）的（至少當年如此），所以原著提醒英國人有這麼一回事，在境外要留神，遭動物咬傷後果可大可小。
但是在我們世界這一邊，沒有地方是未聽過無瘋狗症的，人人都早有戒心。如果刊出原譯那一句，即是顯示到「外地」才需要提防，在本地不必，那是嚴重的誤導了。
專業稱職的翻譯，時常要多走一步，靠的是觸覺、經驗、信心、熱誠、責任感、膽色。
